Naalala ko nung bata ako,  mahilig kami magbenta ng junk shop items..

From plastics, metals, copper, aluminum, to paper and cans.

That was during my grade school days.

After school time in the afternoon, I, together with a 3-4 friends, would look for them, do quick inspection, place it into a plastic sack and sell them to a nearby junkshop.

In exchange of long hours of “treasure” hunting, we would be happy having less than 20 pesos handed to me by the junkshop owner. (20 pesos is malaki na that time!)

It was thrilling for me.

What other considered rubbish trash, I was able to convert to cash. My interest was captured to the idea of recycling.

Why did I do that?

Well, not really for the need of money (though we’re poor then) but because that was one of the hang-out together with my childhood friends.

Aside from the traditional pinoy games like agawan base, patintero, siato, tumbang preso and luksong-baka, looking for these litters and selling them for our group merienda was our time-consumer.

We would roam neighboring areas and look for these sellable scraps.

Aluminum cans were already a jackpot for us.

If you’re aware about the businesss, you would know that aluminum is more “lucrative” than plastics and metals.

When I recall those times, I am left wondering how very fast time really flies.

The experience, though admittedly somewhat grubby, is very educational.

At a young age, it taught me how to distinct a metal from an aluminum to a non-metal.

It trained me how to separate a sellable plastic to a disposable one (yes, not all plastic types are accepted by the junk shop).

And obviously, it exposed me to the need for “accuracy” when it comes to weighing.

Looking back, those experiences might be part of the things that have opened up my interest into science.

That time, TV kid show Sineskwela was still such a hit show which undeniably has also pushed to the next level my curiosity to the subject.

So when I had my chemistry subject in junior high school, it’s chicken to me when our teacher talked about copper, alloys and other metals.  My classmates were introduced to them with scientific characterization and book definitions: I on the other hand, with an actual prior experience.

I would also like to think that the same familiarity led me to the chemical engineering degree I finished in college (with flying colors pa!)

Yes, during my formative years, the things I went through seemed totally meaningless that time.
I looked at it and it’s totally bare.

But 13 years after, it’s easy to see the whole picture with joy and delight. That things happen really for some definite purpose.

Clearly, all the things we had in our childhood year have a big immeasurable impact to the type of dreams we later on aspire.

If you look at yourself, I’m pretty sure that you can also see a direct link from what you’re doing now to what you had before when you were still a small kid.

That reminds me of Steve Jobs when he said

“You can’t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something – your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. Because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well worn path; and that will make all the difference.”
LET’S MAKE A DOT IN CHILDRENS’ LIVES

This coming  Nov 30, Smart Pinoy Investor will be supporting Christmas gift-giving this year 2016!

I invite you to be part of it. We’ll celebrate it at Concordia Children Services orphanage.
My experience in previous years is one that was undescribable!

Also it will be followed by a Jollibee Kiddie party for poor children to be held in Christmas week!

For simple kids, a Christmas party is already a big changer for them! 🙂

You can donate any amount (basta galing sa puso) you want to cover the two events above. (It will be divided equally). Sponsor a kid for 500 if your heart calls.
You can make your deposit to any of the accounts below
Account Name Romer Tawid.

  • BPI Account # 4339300157
  • BDO Account # 006960030969
  • Metrobank Account # 6363636082407
For those overseas, you can send your donations via paypal to (rstawid@gmail.com) using personal payment of $5 (I think the personal payment option has less (or no) deductions than using the donate/buy options so we maximize your donations)
Of course you’re welcome to join us here. (I urge you to be a volunteer!) Let me know – omeng@smartpinoyinvestor.com

This way, we’re making a dot in their lives.

It may just be a single lonely dot now, but years down the road, these children might be able to connect this dot with the rest of points in life they’re going to achieve.

But more than that, this is a reminder for us all to be grateful for all the blessings we have received this year and share to those in more need.

Be part of this greatest investment!

Meet the hopes of our future!

And see you there too!

Have fun investing (in others!)

oMeng

This isn’t a post about why and whether or not you should have kids – it’s a post about the lessons I’ve learned since becoming a parent and how they apply to my business – and how they might apply to yours too – whether you have kids or not.

I’ve Learned to Be Super Efficient (Because I Have to Be)

Before having kids, I remember having all the time in the world to work on my business. I had long stretches of time to really get things done and I didn’t realize just how precious that time was until my kids were born. Once they entered this world, most of that time was dedicated to them and there was very little time left over for my business and my blog.

Our market seems very discouraging now, especially for newbies who have just started investing in the past few months.

And with all that’s happening, I realized two points below:

(1) I’m quite surprised with people who are entering the stock market not aware of the risks associated with investing. They seem to believe that stock market always goes up and seldom goes down.
Thus what we’re having now is a good reminder for everyone that stock market will not always be profitable in the short-term. Key word: short-term.

(2) It’s dangerous to follow an advice from anyone if you’re not aware of the overall plan the word-giver has in mind.

Since that person has a different personality, different risk tolerance and may have totally different plan suited to him, it’s absolutely senseless to follow his advise unless you have exactly the same personality, risk tolerance, and plan (time-horizon) as that person.

What does that mean?
It’s important to be clear with yourself in every trade you make.
At the least, you should have a plan in place for every buy order you make once it’s matched.

And when it comes to seeking recommendations, be clear too with the strategy behind the recommendations you see.

Ask questions like:
How long do we expect the stock to reach your set target price? or
To what extend should I be involved with my stocks with that kind of strategy? or
What’s are the bases of your buy and sell recommendations?

It’s only when you have exact answers to your questions that you become able to assess the recommendations properly.
You then check if the answers you have suits your persona and personal plan.
Only in that case that a recommendation becomes helpful.

Have fun investing (even in hard times like this!)

St. Francis Investment Challenge

(If you want a quick guide for beginners how to start investing in the Philippine stock market, you can download your free ebook here.)
Today I’m launching the St Francis Investment Challenge!  Haha.
The motivation of the challenge is the quote I heard in The Feast’s latest talk series: Follow Me, often attributed to St Francis of Assisi:

“Preach the gospel at all times; use words when necessary”.

While I’m not going to preach the gospel through this blog, I’ll start using less of words in explaining things about stocks investing using the portfolio of a personality whom we’ll call St. Francis (obviously not a real name).
The challenge is very simple actually.
You see, many good things have been said about the performance of long-term investing.
But because of its very nature as long-term, these facts are often retold as second-hand fairytales.
So through this undertaking, we’ll be challenging the very notion of long-term investing, and hopefully verify if it’s indeed a sound strategy.
There will only be three guidelines for this challenge.
(1) This will be very very passive.  No in-depth analysis will be needed. Instead, the challenge will follow a more convenient path of investing – given in the second guideline.
(2) This will consider the guidance from COL Investment Guide and Truly Rich Club in coming up with decision of buying and selling stocks.
Our facebook group – Investing in Philippines Stock Market tips & Tricks – contains updated tables of stocks which members can use in choosing what stocks to buy, such as below. Francis will look at that table every buying and selling times.
(3) Lastly, cash inflow is at least 3k per month.

THE GOAL

The ultimate goal is to make the portfolio reach the 1M mark (though 1M would seem a very small amount by the time the portfolio reaches that figure).
Obviously, this will be a lifelong experiment. And yes, we’re going to see real money.
BPI Trade online broker will be used for this purpose.
BPI Trade is notorious when it comes to bad feedbacks coming from customers regarding its platform and maintenance. And because it’s a more boring and non-interactive platform, the more it becomes effective in focusing on the real thing – which is on selecting and buying and not on playing around and trading. At the end of the day, it is when we buy when we make the money in investing. So we really don’t need a full-blown broker like COL for this purpose.
Twice a month, we’ll receive updates on the performance of the portfolio and short explanations of the recent buys and sells made by Francis.
So without further ado, below is the first shot.
It currently has 1500 shares of SMPH with 36,663.64 cash/buying power.
With the current market situation, what shall Francis do next?
See you in our next update!

Have fun investing (with more actions)!
PS: Obviously, Francis needs to prepare this challenge for the negative too. So just hang around for the challenge updates on how he’ll face those mountains.
PS2: For those just starting their first days in Philippine stock market, here are some click-by-click tutorials for you!

For absolute beginners, begin with this ebook. Enjoy!

(If you want a quick guide for beginners how to start investing in the Philippine stock market, you can download your free ebook here.)
In few day’s I’ll be celebrating my first year anniversary investing in the Philippine stock market. From just an unsolicited invitation, I never thought that I would seriously put some time into it.
I love investing partly because it gives me money! (Do I hear some yeah?!?)
But more than that, I have toy reasons why I continue playing with it.
In fact, I think it can even help me go to heaven.  Haha (Lord, forgive my sins).
Here’s why
  1. I started to love Mondays!  Research says that more people die on Mondays than any other day of the week. And you know the reason, right? People just dread going to work.
Well that’s natural, and I would advise anyone going through that to really look for a job that s/he would enjoy doing.  (Brother Bo Sanchez would say to find your anointing, because that‘s where you can bless the world and where you will prosper.)
In my case, investing in stock market makes me long for Mondays simply because that only means a signal of a long week-time for my investments to work for me. I am just excited to have a big playing field where I can also earn.  As I said before, I see myself doing this in the long run. My heart beats fast just thinking of it..phew!
  1. I become a kinder human being. Before, you would probably hear me complaining while waiting in line in fast-food chain. You see I value my time dearly.  But now, I would love to see people crowding in all Jollibee stores nationwide. I know that those people enjoying their value meals would translate to potential increase of earnings in my JFC (Jolibee Foods Corp) in my stock portfolio.
Similarly, I pay our electricity bill in our home. That became one of my financial assignments when I started working. Good thing is that our electricity provider Meralco is listed in the stock market, so I would just need to buy some shares of it, and receive a portion of their earnings they get from payers like me.
The same goes for my load consumption for Globe, water bill from MWC and shopping spree expenses in SM malls.
Things like those lessen the saddle when making those necessary payments (and doodads?!), knowing that somehow someway, I can dribble back those bouncing balls.
  1. I appreciate my world more.
I have my office at McKinley. And the weird thing about it is that while there are two McDonald’s stores within the area, you wouldn’t find any one Jollibee branch.  And so I still have to ride when I’m craving for that Jabee yum burger.
I found out why – being developer of the area is Megaworld, which is under the bigger umbrella of Alliance Global Inc (AGI) holding company, which also operates McDonald.  A friend says the same case is true in the Eastwood area.
Talk about not-so-fair business tactics!
You see, we’re practically living in a business-run reality, so we might as well be aware of the business air we breathe.
  1. I grow closer to God.
Hear this – investing is not a get-rich quick scheme, because it rests on a very dynamic market.  (Though just today, a co-forumer disclosed his almost 200% gain from one week hold of PWR stocks, enough for him to buy a new car!! WOWOW!)
Seeing paper losses most of the times at times, part of my prayer is that my stocks go back up soon. Haha! But I won’t encourage it for you. Surely there are better ways of growing in your spiritual life than a declining stock. (Serving is known to be an effective one!)
  1.  Lastly, you get to see the best women. Here’s one thing revealed to me when I was in a stock market class I was attending, while observing ladies who had just started exploring investing– women stock market players seem to have better wife-potential. Really!
In my conservative estimation, in terms of serving their solemn role as a wife, they are above average by 40%. Hehe.
There are many practical reasons why.
They are more disciplined, more serious and more risk-taker. They just have less emotion in their life. As you know, emotions do give color to a relationship, but too much if it can bring unnecessary complications more than mutual satisfaction. Hehe
Stock market teaches all its children the value of patience, how to handle greed and fear, how to accept mistakes and loses, and how to embrace reality and start moving on, among many. If you think of it, those are the same essential traits any committed person should have at the least for the relationship to work, not to mention their acquired skills in doing the budget and managing the finances for the future family, and their important ability to see things in the long term. What more can you ask for?!  Haha.
There you have it. Everything mentioned above applies to my experience. You may try investing and find more personal reasons for yourself. We don’t  know it could be your piece of cake.. My prayer is that this investing endeavor can really bring more people to heaven! Whaha
For your financial freedom (and heavenly riches)! J
…ang nakalipas ay ibabalik natin.. – kahit maputi na ang buhok ko, naririnig ko lang ngayon! Lolz!
